About Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Companion
“Spiritual direction is a particular practice of deep listening that is informed by a contemplative way of being in the world. Spiritual direction attends to the on-going, dynamic presence and action of the life of the Spirit….it is a ministry and service of deep listening that breaks through the surface of everyday life and seeks out ‘the more’ that is already present, waiting to be attended to anywhere and everywhere….” (excerpt from Spiritual Director International’s, ”What to Expect” series, 2018).
The word, ‘direction’ can be misleading, as (human) directing is not intended for this role and relationship, yet listening with the heart to one’s potential internal direction. Spiritual companion, Holy Listener or Soul Friend/Guide, might be a few more helpful names. Spiritual Companions are commonly called to this deep work. For many of us, living from a contemplative informed position, immersed in present moments, is a natural and comfortable way of living life, before being led to formal training. Spiritual companioning has a rich history and is an ancient practice, going back to the desert mothers and fathers.
I’m excited to have taken the cathartic time to create a website—challenged to articulate this service of spiritual companioning while loving and expanding the learning community that comes along with it. I am a trained spiritual companion from a two-year program including internship, from Christos Center for Spiritual Formation in Lino Lakes, Mn. My undergraduate degree in education, focused on multicultural education/Human Relations, allowing an internship on an Ojibwe Reservation. My masters degree in educational leadership enabled me to participate in a progressive learning cohort, while teaching and living east of the the San Francisco Bay Area of California. I’m also a licensed Minister at The Mills Church in Minnetonka, Mn.
